Creating opportunities for youth employment through irrigated agriculture

Agriculture is the largest employer in Malawi, engaging approximately 54.8 percent of the youth in various forms of subsistence farming. Despite its significance, the sector faces numerous challenges that adversely affect productivity. These include limited access to land and credit, elevated costs for inputs like seeds and fertilizers, and reliance on rain-fed irrigation, with less than one percent of the agricultural land being irrigated.

Our organization assists young individuals employed in rural areas to earn a livelihood through agriculture. We supply them with land, certified seeds, organic fertilizers, and various irrigation systems, such as solar-powered irrigation, in order to improve productivity.

This support allows these young farmers to cultivate high-yield cash crops, including beans, onions, early-maturing maize, and sweet potatoes, all year round, thereby enhancing food security and increasing household income.
